Question
1.
A company manufactures steel bolts. During a single day, 20,000 kg of steel enters the company’s factory. The manufacturing process used by the company causes approximately 25% of this steel to be turned into scrap metal (chips) that must be removed from the factory and shipped to a salvage company. The remainder of the steel is turned into bolts. Of these bolts, approximately 5% are found to be defective and therefore are also shipped to a salvage company. The factory operates at steady state and the mass of each bolt is 0.2 kg.
a.) Determine the number of bolts produced each day.
The company also owns a warehouse that is used to store bolts when demand is low or provide bolts when demand is high. On one day there are 500,000 bolts in the warehouse at the start of the day. During the day 50,000 bolts are sent from the factory to the warehouse while 80,000 bolts are shipped out to customers from the warehouse. Bolts are a conserved quantity in the warehouse; that is, bolts are not generated or destroyed.
b.) Determine the number of bolts in the warehouse at the end of the day
c.) Is the warehouse operating at steady state?
Explanation / Answer
Answer for (a)
Steel enters to factory in one day =20000kgs
approximate scrap at manufacturing process= 25%
25% on 20000kgs = 15000kgs
So Useful steel = 15000kgs
Weight of each bolt= 0.2 kgs
So No of bolts made by 15000kgs steel= 75000
But 5%of bolts are defective
So 5% on 75000= 3750
Total useful bolts per day = 75000-3750
=71250
So no of bolts produced each day =71250
Answer for (b)
Start of the day no of bolts at warehouse=500000
Bolts send factory to Warehouse= 50000
Total bolts at warehouse= 500000+50000
=550000
Bolts shipped out from warehouse= 80000
Remaining bolts at warehouse= 550000-80000
=470000
So no of bolts at the end of the day at warehouse= 470000
Answer for (c)
The warehouse is not operated at steady state
