Question

Problem 3: In last year's dynamics class, students were tasked with designing, analyzing, and prototyping packaging that could protect an egg dropped from the third floor of Cebula Hall (i.e., at a height of 32.4 ft above the ground). One of the students, (Abdul Boudi) whose prototype worked designed his packaging as a memory foam completely surrounding the egg that's packed within an 8in x 8in x 8in cardboard box (see figure below for a picture of his prototype) After the experiment, Bornasal made some measurements. Given the height of the drop and some assumptions, she determined that the velocity of the package directly before touching the ground was 45.68 ft/s. The packing material (i.e. box and foam) experienced a maximum compression of 1.5 inches. Finally, directly after contact with the ground, the package experiences an acceleration a =-kx, where k is a constant and x is the compression of the packing material. Based on this information, determine the following: (a) What does the constant k represent? (b) What is the numerical value for k, given the noted conditions? [Answer: 134 000 sA-2] (c) What is the maximum acceleration of the egg? (d) Is the maximum acceleration value you determined in part (c) reasonable? Write a couple of sentences justifying your answer

Explanation / Answer

answer of problem 3-

a)k is the constant, which measures how stiff and strong the object is.It is a constant factor characteristic of the spring, I.e stiffness. X is the distance the object is stretched or compressed away from its equilibrium or rest position
