Question

(e) The table below shows the average dynamic capacitive switching power dissipation for the latest uarchitecture of an IBM Power processor operating at different voltages. You may assume the short-circuit dynamic power is negligible 1.2V 1.0V 0.8V Capacitive Switching Power (W)75 60 35 i. Compute the static power dissipation for an operating supply voltage of 0.8V assuming the average static power to dynamic switching power ratio is 0.6. ii. Compute the static and dynamic switching power dissipation for each operating voltage assuming the rate computed in problem c(i)

Explanation / Answer

(i) Static power / dynamic switching power =0.6

Static power = 0.6 * 35 = 21 W ( at 0.8V switching power = 35 W as given in table).

(ii) For this part at 1.2 V dynamic power is 75 W so static power = 75*0.6 =45 W

Similarly at 1.0 V dynamic switching power is 60 W so static switching power dissipation is 0.6 * 60 = 36 W
