A) Write expressions for the electric and magnetic fields of a sinusoidal plane

ID: 2072016 • Letter: A

Question

A) Write expressions for the electric and magnetic fields of a sinusoidal plane electromagnetic wave having an electric field amplitude of 300.0 V/m and a frequency of 3.00 GHz and traveling in the positive x direction.

B) Now assume we can stop the wave instantly and calculate the electric field to be E=(80.0i + 32.0j - 64.0k)N/C and the magnetic field to be B=(0.20i + 0.08j + 0.29k)(mew)T.

i) Show that the two fields are perpendicular to each other.

ii) Determine the Poynting vector for these fields.

Explanation / Answer

here is a different version of this guy.. should help

The basic form of these will be

E = E?cos(kx - ?t)

B = B?cos(kx - ?t)

where
k = "angular wave number," aka, angular spatial frequency, in radians/(unit length)
? = angular frequency, in radians/(unit time)

Now, a Hz is a cycle/s, and a cycle is 2? radians. So
3.30 GHz = 3.30
