Question
You build an LRC series circuit using a 3.00 V AC source (and variable frequency), a 10.0 O resistor, a 10. 0 µF capacitor, and a coil of unknown inductance. You adjust the frequency of the source until the circuit is in resonance, and find that the resonant frequency is 100.0 Hz. What is the inductance of the coil? Show all work.You remove the AC voltage source, and leave the rest connected in series to form a simple LRC circuit. If the values for L, R, and C are the same as found in the previous problem is the current under-damped, over-damped, or critically damped? show all work and explain you answer please!
Explanation / Answer
Solution:
1)
We know at resonance;
Fr = 1/2**LC
therefore;
L = 1/C*(2**f)2
Therefore after putting C=10u ; f =100
we get L=0.25330 Henry
2) There is no need to calculate the behaviour of current flowing in the circuit with AC source removed.It will be done by expection method.With C and L(energy storing elements) connected in series with a resistor(energy dissipation element) ; L and C will tend to behave like a source and R will behave like a load to them .Therefore an Oscillatory exponentially decaying current will flow through the circuit.Hence it is clear that current will be underdamped.
