Test your understanding: Question: Which of the following state ments does NOT apply to transcription factors such as SRY? A) Their subcellular localisation can be visualised by confocal microscopy B) They bind to promoters of specific target genes C) S ome are powerful enough to initiate the differentiation cascade of an entire organ D) They can function anywhere within a cell E) Knocking out these factors can significantly alter development Provide your reasoning for accepting or rejecting EACH of the options above: A) B) D) E)Explanation / Answer
Answer : D
SRY (Sex determining Region Y) gene is present in chromosome Y (determines the sex) and it encodes a protein which acts as transcription factor to regulate or control sexual organs development in male. This transcription factor binds to specific target genes to activate the development process of male gonads (testes) and thereby prevents development of female reproductive organs. When this gene is knocked out, male reproductive organs cannot develop. Transcription factors are localized only in nucleus so they cannot function anywhere in the cell but function only in the nucleus. It can be visualized using confocal microscopy.
