Question

1. A singly ionized Nickel atom has an overall charge of 1.602 x 10^-19C and a mass m = 9.80 x 10^-26 g. It travels to the right with speed v entering a velocity selector and then a delfection chamber. In both the velocity selector and delfection chamber, the uniform magnetic feild is 0.150-T directed into the page.

A). If the speed of the Nickelatom is 1700 m/s, what must the magnitude and direction of the uniform Electric field be within the velocity selector if it goes straight through?

B). what will the radius of the curved path that the Nickel atom has within the deflection chamber be?

Explanation / Answer

Part A)

The formula to use is v = E/B

E = vB = (1700)(.150) = 255 N/C. By the right hand rule, it must be directed downward

Part B)

r = mv/qB

r = (9.8 X 10-26)(1700)/(1.602 X 10-19)(.150)

r = 6.93 X 10-3 m which is .693 cm   or   6.93 mm however you want the answer
