Question

the following capacitors are attached to a 10V battery

what is the charge and potentical difference across each capacitor??

(answers: C1: 40,2V    C2: 40,2V    C3: 80, 8V)

Explanation / Answer

since the capacitors C1 and C2 are in parallel the equivalent capacitance is = C1 +C2 = 40 uF now this capacitor is in series with the 10 uF capacitor => net capacitance of th e circuit is C ' = 40*10/(40+10) = 8 uF => the charge stored on the total equivalent capacitor is Q = 8*10^-6*10 = 80 uC now since the capacitors (C1 & C2) and C3 are in series the charge on C3 = 80 uC => voltage difference is V3 = 8 V now for the capacitors C1 and C2 the voltage difference is = 2 V (10 - voltage across C3) => charge on C1 = 2*20 = 40 uC and the potential difference is 2 V similarly the charge on C2 = 20 *2 = 40 uC and the potential difference is 2 V
