Question

Suppose Bob bought an SUV that originally had tires with a diameter of 26 inches, but then replaced them with larger tires that have a diameter of 28 inches, but he did not adjust the computer.
1. If Bob's speedometer reads 85 mph, what is Bob's actual speed? (Hint: Use the equation v=r?)
2. Bob's GPS navigation system says that he drove 15,000 miles this year. How far did the odometer say he had traveled? (Hint: Use equation s=r?)
3. Bob's onboard computer says he averages 16mpg. What s his actual gas mileage?
4. Assuming gas costs $4 per gallon, how mucg money did Bob spend on gas this year? How much did Bob save on gasoline this year by changing to larger tires?
5. Do you think Bob's investment in larger tires was worthwhile? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

1) actual speed = 85*(2*28/2*26) = 91.54 mph

2) apparent distance(odometer) 15000*(2*26/2*28)=13928.5 miles

3) actual mileage= 16*(2*28/2*26)=17.23mpg

4) money = 4*(actual distance/ actual mileage)

=4(15000/17.23)=3482.3 $

5.the investment was not worthwhile because the expenditure on gas would have been same even with 26 inch tires
