Question

A parallel-plate capacitor filled with air has plates of area 6.7×10-3 m^2 and a separation of 0.40 mm.

a). Find the magnitude of the charge on each plate when the capacitor is connected to a 12- V battery.
Express your answer using two significant figures.

b).Will your answer to part A increase, decrease, or stay the same if the separation between the plates is increased? Explain why?

c). Calculate the magnitude of the charge on the plates if the separation is 0.80 mm .
Express your answer using two significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

C = A/d

= 8.852 * 10-12 * 6.7 * 10-3 / 0.4 * 10-3

= 1.483 * 10-10 F

a)

Q = CV

= 1.779 * 10-7 C

b)

If seperation is increased, then C decreases.

Hence Charge on the plate also decreases.

c)

d = 0.8 mm

C = A/d

= 8.852 * 10-12 * 6.7 * 10-3 / 0.8 * 10-3

= 7.413 * 10-11 F

Q = CV

= 8.896 * 10-10 C
