Question

In this problem we will look at projectile motion under an electric field.
Consider a particle with mass m = 1 kg and charge q = 1 C. The particle is
fired from the ground with speed V0 = 5 m/s at an angle of = 30 degrees from the
horizontal. Ignore gravity, and instead consider that there is a uniform elec-
tric field ~E = -1 ^j everywhere in space. The particle will undergo projectile
motion under the influence of this electric field. Find:

The total horizontal distance travelled by the particle before landing.

Explanation / Answer

speed of particle along verical direction vy = 5 sin30 = 2.5m/s
acceleration of particle along verical direction ay = -1 m/s2
therefore
0 = (2.5*2.5) - 2*1*h

horizontal distance travelled by the particle h = 3.125m
