Question

Hello. For an exam, the question asked: What steps would you take in order to select a microorganism in determining whether or not it is capable of degrading a certain chemical.

My response was I could look at closely related species to that microbe to see if they are capable and also a step further, to look at the microbe's genome by sequencing to get detailed information on the microbe. I chose to write on sequencing because our test was mostly focused on it.

My question is: Am I entirely wrong in my response? Could I have said something different? Thank you.

Explanation / Answer

If a microorganism is capable of degrade a chemical then it can be determined by growing them in a Petri dish having the minimal media but make sure it contains the chemical. Inorder to survive the conditions of minimal media the microorganism has to degrade the chemical and get the carbohydrates to survive. So, if you get growth on the Petri dish having minimal media and chemical you can determine that the microorganism is able to degrade a certain chemical and after that you can sequence the genome of that microorganisms to compare it with other species and see the the similarities.
