Question
Problem 2 n unpolarized electromagnetic wave is sent through two sheets of polarizing material. rst sheet, A, is oriented so that its transmission axis makes an angle of 30° with respect to the vertical. The second sheet, B, is oriented so that its transmission axis makes an angle of 90° with the vertical. The incident beam has an electric field of peak magnitude of 250 N/C and average intensity So of 83 W/m2 a) What is the average intensity of the beam after it passes through sheet A. 30° 90° b) What is the peak value of electric field after it goes through sheet A.Explanation / Answer
Polarization will only change the intensity. So, After passing through the first polarizer, average intensity will remain S0 = 83 W/m^2 while the wave will get polarized along A which is 30 degrees to vertical.
As said above, the intensity will only change, so, the peak value of the electric field will remain same after sheet A as 250 N/C.
