4-1 points CJ10 26 P011 My Notes Ask Your Teac A ray of light impinges from air onto a block of ice (n1.309) at a 56.0° angle of incidence. Assuming that this angle remains the same, find the difference ?2, ice-?2, water in the angles of refraction when the ice turns to water (n 1.333). ?2, ice-02, water . Explanation / Answer

4.

Using snell's law:

n1*sin A1 = n2*sin A2

n1 = refractive index of Air = 1

n2 = refractive index of ice = 1.309

A1 = Angle of incidence = 56 deg

A2 = angle of refraction for ice = ?

A2 = arcsin ((n1/n2)*sin A1)

Using given values:

A2 = arcsin ((1/1.309)*sin 56 deg) = 39.2967 deg

for water:

n2 = refractive index of water = 1.333

A1 = Angle of incidence = 56 deg

A3 = angle of refraction of water = ?

A3 = arcsin ((n1/n2)*sin A1)

Using given values:

A3 = arcsin ((1/1.333)*sin 56 deg) = 38.4575 deg

So

A3 - A2 = 39.2967 - 38.4575 = 0.8392 deg
