Question

You are in a distressed submarine at a depth of 26 m in the Pacific Ocean. There is a circular hatch at the bottom of the submarine with a diameter of 72.4 cm that opens outward. If the air pressure inside the submarine is 1 atmosphere, how much force (in Newtons) must you apply to the hatch to open it and escape to the surface? You will need to open you textbooks to obtain necessary values for some things not provided in this question. Do not round during the problem, and keep at least 2 decimal places in your answer.

Explanation / Answer

we know, density of ocean water, rho = 1027 kg/m^3

given h = 26 m

d = 72.4 cm = 0.724 m

Gaughe pressure at the given depth, P = rho*g*h

= 1027*9.8*26

= 2.617*10^5 pa

Force needed to open the hatch, F = P*A

= P*(pi*d^2/4)

= 2.617*10^5*(pi*0.0724^2/4)

= 1077

= 1.08*10^3 N <<<<----Answer
