Question

1. The drawing shows that a uniform magnetic field is directed perpendicularly out of the plane of the paper and fills the entire region to the right of the y-axis. There is no magnetic field to the left of the y- axis. A rigid semi-circular loop is made of copper wire. The semi-circle rotates clockwise about the origin. What is the direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) of the induced current when the semicircle is crossing (a) the ty axis, (b) the tx axis, (c) the -y axis, and (d) the -x axis? For each case, justify your answer.

Explanation / Answer

(a)

When it is crossing +y-axis, the flux enclosed by the loop is increasing, so the direction of induced current should be such that to oppose the increasing flux(Lenz's law). So it should be clockwise.

(b)

When it is crossing +x-axis, the flux enclosed by the loop is still increasing, So it should still be clockwise.

(c)

When it is crossing -x-axis, the flux enclosed by the loop is decreasing, so the direction of induced current should be such that to oppose the decreasing flux(Lenz's law). So it should be anticlockwise.
