Question
The three freight cars A, B, and C have masses of 12 Mg,7 Mg, and 23 Mg, respectively. They are traveling along the track with the velocities shown. Car A collides with car B first, followed by car C (Figure 1) Part A If the three cars couple together after collision, determine the common velocity of the cars after the two collisions have taken place Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units View Available Hint(s) VABCValeUnits Submit Return to Assignment Provide Feedback Figure 1 of 1 20 km/h 5 km/h 25 km/hExplanation / Answer
Using momentum conservation:
Pi = Pf
m1v1 + m2v2 + m3v3 = (m1 + m2 + m3)*V
m1 = 12 Mg, & v1 = 20 km/hr
m2 = 7 Mg, & v2 = 5 km/hr
m3 = 23 Mg, & v2 = -25 km/hr
Now Using above given values:
12*20 + 7*5 - 23*25 = (12 + 7 + 23)*V
V = (12*20 + 7*5 - 23*25)/42
V = -7.14 km/hr
