My Notes Ask Your Teacher A dam is inclined at an angle of 30° from the vertical and has the shape of an isosceles trapezoid 140 ft wide at the top and 70 ft wide at the bottom and with a slant height of 110 ft. Find the hydrostatic force on the dam when it is full of water. (Round your answer to the nearest whole number. Recall that the weight density of water is 62.5 Ib/ft3.) 31718750 X lb Need Help? As we know that, hydrostatic force, F = Pressure (P) x Area (A)
Now, it is given that the inclined angle is 30 degree –
So, the height of the dam, h = 110 * cos 30
So, the pressure when the dam is full, P = hpg = (110* cos 30)(62.5)(9.81 x 3.28)
= 191578.2 lb/ft^2
Again we have the area, A = 0.5(140 + 70)(110 * cos 30) = 105*95.26 = 10002.6 ft^2
So, the hydrostatic force on the dam = 191578.2 x 10002.6 = 1.916 x 10^9 lb.
