Question

We’re going to find the voltage and current through the 5 ohm resistor. Keep at least 3 significant figures as you work through the problem. A) what is the equivalent resistance of this circuit? B) for the following questions, let V=8 volts. What current is in the 2 ohm resistor? C) what is the voltage across the 3 ohm resistor? D) what is the current through the 4 ohm resistor? E) what is the voltage across the 5 ohm resistor? F) what is the current through the 5 ohm resistor? 10.0 ? 4.00 ? 5.00 ? 3.00 ?

Explanation / Answer

A)10 and 5 are in parallel

R5 = 10 x 5/(10+5) = 3.33 Ohm

R5 and 4 are in series

R45 = 3.33 + 4 = 7.33 Ohm

Now R45 and 3 are in parallel

R345 = 3 x 7.33/(3 + 7.33) = 2.13 Ohm

Now R345 in series with 2

Req = 2 + 2.13 = 4.13 Ohm

Hence, Req = 4.13 Ohm

b)I = V/R = 8/4.13 = 1.94 A

Hence, I2 = 1.94 A

c)V3 = 8 - (2 x 1.94) = 4.12 V

Hence, V3 = 4.12 V

d)I3 = 4.12/3 = 1.37 A

I4 = 1.94 - 1.37 = 0.57 A

Hence, I4 = 0.57 A

e)V5 = 4.12 - 0.57 x 4 = 1.84 V

Hence, V5 = 1.84 V

f)I5 = 1.84/5 = 0.37 A

Hence, I5 = 0.37 A
