Question

bearing and use the rubber band to attach the paperclip to the battery. See figure below. Paper Clip Motor Ce Paper Clip Paper Clip Magnet BATTERY 3. Place the magnet on the battery below where the armature will be. Then place the armature on the paperclip to see if it will spin. It may need a small push to overcome friction but that is allowed. If it does not spin, give it a push in the other direction. You might need to adjust the support arms and the armature to get it to spin steadily. CAUTION: If you let the motor run for more than a minute it can get very hot. Be careful not to burn yourself by touching the hot wire loops. Questions: 1. Explain the importance of scraping the insulation on only one side of the coil's leads. 2. What happen if you flip your magnet upside down on the battery? Will your motor spin in the same direction? Explain your answer. 3. If you add more turns (or loops in your armature) does your motor run faster? Explain your answer in detail.

Explanation / Answer

1) As the battery delivering current, a part of the battery voltage is used up for heating. Scraping insulation on one side will allow the current to run in the circuit. Thus with complete insulation this device wont run.

2)No, the motor will spin in the oppposite direction. The direction of the magnetic field and the current can be found out by the right hand thumb rule. It says to curl the finger in the direction of the magnetic and the thumb will give the direction of the current. Thus, flipping the magnet will lead to alter its polarity and as a result the direction of the magnetic field will change thus changing the direction of the current.

3)Yes, by increasing the number of loops in the armature the motor will run faster. This is the case of an electromagnet, where the strength of the magnetic field is increased by increasing the number of turns in a coil.
