The figure shows a jet engine suspended beneath the wing of an airplane. The weight of the engine is 12800 N and acts as shown in the figure. In fight the engine produces a thrut?of53900 N that is parallel to the ground. The rotatonal aus n the ngre sp dolr to the plane ofthe paper. with respect to this ass, nnd the magnitude of the torque due to (a) the weight and (b) the thrust Units N-m (o) Number 5 8 0Explanation / Answer
Torque = force * perpendicular distance
We need to find perpendicular distance.
we can use trigonometric identity to find the perpendicular distance. Remeber for weight and thrust, there is different perpendicular distances
(a) For weight, we have sin theta = d / 2.50
sin 32 = d / 2.50
d = 2.50*sin 32
so, Torque by weight = 12800*2.50*sin 32
Torque = 16957.42 N.m
(b) for thrust,
we have cos theta = d/2.50
d = 2.50*cos 32
so, torque = 53900*2.50*cos 32
torque = 114274.5 N.m
