Question
Use the exact values you enter to make later calculations A ray of light strikes a flat, 2.00-cm-thick block of glass (n # 1.37) at an angle of 35.0° with respect to the normal (see figure below) 2.00 cm (a) Find the angle of refraction at the top surface and the angle of incidence at the bottom surface. 16.6 Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. b)Find the refracted angle at the bottom surface. 23.0 Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations.° (c) Find the lateral distance d by which the light beam is shifted 18.4 Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. Rework your solution from the beginning and check each step carefully. cm (d) Calculate the speed of light in the glass 2.18e8 m/s (e) Calculate the time required for the light to pass through the glass block. 9.59e-10 7:39 3/29/2 Type here to search A ENGExplanation / Answer
a) use Snell's law
sin(theta_i)/sin(theta_r) = n2/n1
sin(35)/sin(theta_r) = 1.37/1
sin(theta_r) = sin(35)/1.37
theta_r = sin^-1(0.4187)
= 24.8 degrees
b) theta_r = 35 degrees
c)
we know,
lateral displacement, d = t*sin(theta_i - theta_r)/cos(theta_r)
= 2*sin(35 - 24.8)/cos(24.8)
= 0.39 cm or 3.9 mm <<<<<<<<<--------------Answer
d) v = c/n
= 3*10^8/1.37
= 2.19*10^8 m/s
e) time taken = distance travelled/speed
= (2*10^-2/cos(24.8))/(2.19*10^8)
= 1.01*10^-10 s <<<<<<<<<--------------Answer
