Question

You are helping to develop a pump for use in artificial hearts. In the pump is a small valve shaped like a square that is 0.5 cm on a side. This square is like a door, attached to the pump along one edge, and it must be able to close very fast, swinging through an angle of 120° in 0.08 seconds when starting from rest. To help with the design, you have been asked to calculate the constant angular acceleration this valve has when it closes, as well as the maximum speed of the free edge of the valve (opposite the hinge) when it closes.

Explanation / Answer

Let angular acceleration is a m/s^2

We got

Theta=0.5*a*t^2

Thera=2*pi/3

Putting the value

a=654.5 rad/s^2

maximul speed=654.5*0.08*0.005=0.26 m/s
