Beam me up, Date Workout Problems you choose to do. Answers must be legible and accompanied by a complete working problem (including initial equations) in order to receive credit. :dearly label es: Choose 2 ont of the 4 problems. Make sure to clearly label which problems of the 1) Give the circuit below R2-1.00 R3-2.00 av R4-4.00 R5-3.002 RI-5.00 Find the equivalent resistance. a. b. If R2 is a light bulb (the rest are typical resistors) which will blow if the current gets above 1.5 A, then what is the maximum voltage of the power supply at which the bulb will not blow? If R5 is the light bulb described above instcad of R2, then what is the maximum voltage of c. the power supply at which the bulb will not blow? d. If you only had the five resistors above, what could you change about the circuit to make the power dissipated less?

Explanation / Answer

(a) Equivalent resistance -

R4 and R5 are connected in parallel.

So, its equivalent = R4*R5 / (R4+R5) = (4*3) / (4+3) = 1.71 ohm

Now this resistance is in series with R1, R2 and R3.

So, the equivalent resistance of the circuit = 1.71 + 5 + 1 + 2 = 9.71 ohm.

(b) If current in R2 = 1.5 A,

then current in R4 = 1.5*3 / (3+4) = 0.64 A

Current in R5 = 1.5 - 0.64 = 0.86 A

therefore, maximum voltage of the power supply at which the bulb will not glow = (1+2+5)*1.5 + 4*0.64 +3*0.86

= 12.0 + 2.56 + 2.58 = 17.14 V

(c) In this case, maximum current in R5 = 1.5 A

So, current in R4 = (1.5*3) / 4 = 1.12 A

and current in the resistore, R1, R2, R3 = 1.5+1.12 = 2.62 A

So, the requisite potential difference = (5+1+2)*2.62 + 3*1.5 + 1.12*4 = 20.96 + 4.5 + 4.48 = 29.94 V

(d) Power dissipated will be less when all the resistors will be connected in parallel.
