Question

How and from where do you derive the expression: Qh=Wout(1-n)? This is a necessary algebraic operation to solve exercise 19.27 from the textbook: Physics for scientists and engineers a strategic approach

Edit: 1) The symbols come from thermodynamics, and in this exercise they apply to heat engines and refrigerators specifically. Qh=heat to or from hot reservoir; Wout=work done by heat engine; n=thermal efficiency.

2) The exercise goes as follows: A heat engine operating between a hot reservoir at 500 degree celcius and a cold reservoir at 0 degree celcius is 60% as efficient as a Carnot engine. If this heat engine and the Carnot engine do the same amount of work, what is the ratio Qh/(Qh)Carnot?

Explanation / Answer

Qh /Qh = heat used by heat engine / heat used by carnot engine

= 1/effieciency

= 1/0.64

= 1.56
