Question 2) Workload & Stress vs. Performance. Discussion/Essay (50 pts) Figure 1: The Yerkes-Dodson Human Performance and Stress Curve Human Performance Curve Optimal performance Aim to keep employees at this performance level Fatigue Energised Focused Work feels Seeing improvement Ill Health Breakdown& Burnout effortless Bored CALM STRESS DISTRESS Stress Now let's move on to workload and stress and its effect on performance and safety. In your own words, explain the Yerkes-Dodson model of workload/stress vs. performance (see above). What is the relationship between workload/stress and performance? How does workload/stress impact physically? How does it impact us cognitively (mentally)? What is going on in each of the three parts of the curve above (Calm / Stress / Distress)? Is it always good to have a low /calm workload? Why or why not? What could happen? Give examples of when being in this state might be undesirable. What goes on cognitively and physically when stress and workload push us in to the distress part of the curve? Why is distress a bad state? What could happen? Give examples of when being in a state of distress might be undesirable. As designers what role does workload and stress play in how we design a job/system/interface?Explanation / Answer
1. The yerkes dodsun model depicts a relationship between stree/arousal with performance. This was originally developed in 1908. This law explains that the performance increases with the level of mental or physical arousal but only upto a point. At the point the arousal becomes excessive , the performance dimishes.
It is not good always to have a low workload as this also gives rise to lower performance as boredom sets in.It is not good to have a low workload push. In the bell shaped curve, you will observe that the middle of the curve raises maximum performance as the individuals are energized and active , this gives rise to increased performance.
Cognitively we have a bad effect on our mind as, tremendous stress, anxiety sets in, pulling us down and not allowing us to do any productive work. Physically our health suffers as there is exhaustion, health breakdown etc.
