Question

Bats are capable of navigating using the earth's field-a plus for an animal that may fly great distances from its roost at night. If, while sleeping during the day, bats are exposed to a field of a similar magnitude but different direction than the earth's field, they are more likely to lose their way during their next lengthy night flight. Suppose you are a researcher doing such an experiment in a location where the earth's field is 50 T at a 60 angle below horizontal. You make a 70 cm diameter, 250-turn coil around a roosting box; the sleeping bats are at the center of the coil. You wish to pass a current through the coil to produce a field that, when combined with the earth's field, creates a net field with the same strength and dip angle (60 below horizontal) as the earth's field but with a horizontal component that points south rather than north.

Part A:

I keep getting the wrong answer for Part B and don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Thank you for your help!

If we draw a picture with north in the positive x-direction, south in the negative x-direction, up in the positive y-direction, and down in the negative y-direction, the original field of the earth BE would be in the fourth quadrant at 60° belovw the x-axIS. (Figure 1) By adding the coil's magnetic field, Bcol, we want the new net magnetic field, BNet to be in the third quadrant at 60° below the negative x-axis. (Figure 2) What is the proper orientation of the coil? View Available Hint(s) Axis of the coil is horizontal and O directed south-north. (Right-left in our picture.) Axis of the coil is horizontal and directed east-west. (Into and out of the page.) Axis of the coil is 60 below horizontal and directed south-north. (In the fourth quadrant, 60° below the x-axis.) Axis of the coil is 30° above horizontal and directed south-north. (In the first quadrant, 30° abox the x-axis.)

Explanation / Answer

partA] Axis of coil is horizontal and directed south north.

PartB) Bcoil = 50 uT

it will be along -x axis, so the angle between two fields will be 120 degree and hence the resultant will be same in magnitude
