Question

A set of resistors are connected to a 9.00 V battery as shown in the figure below. The resistors have values of R1-200 , R2 100 , R3 500 , R4 100 , and R5 300 (a) Before the switch is closed, what is the current drawn from the battery? (b) After the switch is closed, what is the voltage drop Rs across each resistor? R2 R3 R4 istors and a capacitor are connected to a 20.0 V battery as shown in the figure below. The resistors have values of Ri 100 , R2 200 , R3-300 , and 14-400 , and the capacitance of the capacitor is C 250 nF (a) What is the voltage drop across each resistor at t 0? (b) What is the current through each resistor at t- o0? (c) what is the charge on the capacitor at t = oo? Ri R4 Rs R2

Explanation / Answer

a)Before the switch is closed, R5 and R4 are not the part of the circuit.

The effective resistance of circuit is:

R13 = 200 + 500 = 700

Req = 700 x 200/(700 + 200) = 155.56 Ohm

V = IR => I = V/R

I = 9/155.56 = 0.058 A = 58 mA

Hence, I = 0.058 A = 58 mA

b) After the switch is closed

R45 = 100 + 300 = 400

1/Req = 1/700 + 1/400 + 1/400 => Req = 155.56 Ohm

V13 = 9 => V1 + V3 = 9

I1 = I3 =>V1/200 = V3/500 => V3 = 2.5 V1

V1 + 2.5V1 = 9 => V1 = 2.6 V

V3 = 6.5 V

V2 = 9 ; V45 = 9

V4 + V5 = 9

I4 = I5 => V4/100 = V5/300 => V5 = 3 V4

V4 + 3V4 = 9 => 2.25 V

V5 = 3 x 2.25 = 6.75 V

Hence, V1 = 2.6 V ; V2 = 9 V ; V3 = 6.5 V ; V4 = 2.25 V ; V5 = 6.75 V
