Question

Two narrow slits are illuminated by monochromatic light and an interference pattern is observed on a wall. The distance from the slits to the wall is 6.0 m, the slit separation is 2.0E-5 m and the wavelength is 5.60E-7 m. Determine the separation between the central bright fringe and the third dark fringe..
The correct answer is 0.421 meters, but I have no idea how to get to this answer. I've tried several different ways including y= 3(lamda)D/d and keep getting an answer of 0.504 m. Can anyone help me figure out what I am doing wrong. Please?

Explanation / Answer

The distance from the slits to the wall D = 6.0 m
The slit separation d = 2.0x 10 -5 m The wavelength = 5.60 x 10 -7 m The separation between the central bright fringe and the third dark fringe y = ? Condition for third bark fringe d sin = 5/2                                             d(y / D ) = 2.5 From this y = 2.5 D / d Subsitute values we get y = 0.421 m
