Question

A 145 km long electric power line made out of copper is installed during the Spring months at an average temperature of 11.7 °C. What is the change in the length of the power line on a hot Summer day, when the temperature is 31.4 °C? The coefficient of linear expansion for copper is 1.62×10-5 1/C°. Use positive sign for an increase in length and negative for a decrease.

What is the change in the length of the cable on a -32.7 °C cold Winter day?

Explanation / Answer

On the summer day, T = 19.7 °C.   So L/L = (19.7 °C)(1.62 * 10-5 C°-1) = 3.19 * 10-4

So the change in length is (3.19 * 10-4)(145 * 103 m) = 46.3 m

On a winter day, T = -44.4 °C. So L/L = (-44.4 °C)(1.62 * 10-5 C°-1) = -7.19 * 10-4

Now the change in length is (-7.19 * 10-4)(145 * 103 m) = -104.3 m
