Why is a fit person's heart rate slower than that of an unfit person? 10. What if an overweight person used the Harris Benedict for- mula? Would they overestimate or underestimate their daily Caloric needs?

Explanation / Answer

6) It is the BMR or Basal Metabolic Rate that represents the resting energy use of an awake, alert person.

7) There are several factors which effect a persons BMR.

These include the following:

8) Among these three, that is Carbohydrates, proteins and fats, It is fats that have most calories per gram.

Fat has almost 9 calories per gram while that of carbohydrates and proteins are almost same. Both of them has 4 calories per gram.

9) Usually the heart rate of a fit person will be lower than that of an unfit person. It gives idea about the cardio vascular fitness of an individual. In normal humans who doesnot undergo routine physical exercises the heart rate will in between 75 to 80. But in individuals who are fit due to regular exercises the heart rate will be much lower than this. ie, probably between 50 to 60.

This difference is because of changes in stroke volume (Stroke volume can be defined as the amount of blood pumbed by the left ventricle of the heart in one contraction). A person who is doing an exersise or vigorous work requires more oxygen to be supplied to his blood. So, per heart beat, a large volume of oxygen is pumbed to his blood which infact increases ones stroke volume. This might have increased his cardio vascular fitness. This is the reason why fit persons have lower heart rates. But, in an unfit person, his heart has to beat in an incresed rate to pumb more oxygenated blood which ultimately increases his heart beat.
