INTRO
Newton is primarily known for his mechanical equations, but Newton also spent quite some time investigating lenses and the bahviour of light. In Newton's view, light can be considered as particles that travel in straight lines. His research into lenses led to an alternative model for the lens equation. In this model x is the distance of the object from the focal point on the front side of the lens and x' is the distance of the image to the focal point on the other side of the lens.
(A)
What is the thin lens equation in terms of Newton's notation?
Answer:
x * x' = f
(B)
di = .......... cm
(C)
di = .......... cm
Explanation / Answer
from the conclusion of A focal length equation according to Newton's Notation x*x1 = f ..... (1) (B) standard form : 1/f = 1/x +1/x1 1/x1 =1/f -1/x = (1/60 - 1/45) x1 = -179.99 cm (C) Newtonian Form : x = object distance do = 60 cm f = focal length = 45 cm xi = image distanc di = xi = f/x = 45 cm / 60 cm = 0.75 cm x = object distance do = 60 cm f = focal length = 45 cm xi = image distanc di = xi = f/x = 45 cm / 60 cm = 0.75 cmRelated Questions
