Question
A 100 kg fullback is running at 3.5 m/s to the east and is stopped in 0.75 s by a head-on tackle by a tackler running due west.(a) Calculate the original momentum of the fullback.
kg·m/s 2 ---Select--- west north south east
(b) Calculate the impulse exerted on the fullback.
kg·m/s 4 ---Select--- west east south north
(c) Calculate the impulse exerted on the tackler.
kg·m/s 6 ---Select--- west north east south
(d) Calculate the average force exerted on the tackler.
N 8 ---Select--- south west north east
Explanation / Answer
a) Original momentum of fullback p = mv = 100kg * 3.5 = 350kg*m/s east
b)Impulse is equal to change in momentum J = p. Since the momentum goes from 350-kgm/s to 0kgm/s the impulse is 350kgm/s -west since impulse and momentum have opposite directions
c.) change in momentum must be the same for both so impulse must be the same as well
350kgm/s and the momentum was west so the impulse is east
d) J = p = Ft = mv
F = mv/t = 100kg *3.5m/s/0.75 = 466.67N east
Hope that helps
