Question
26.A) If you increase the pressure on hydrogen, what will happen to it? what can you conclude will happen if you increase pressure?26.b) give to ways in which you could turn hydrogen into a gas?
Iron_ (A) releases energy when it decays into an atom with a lower atomic number. (B) releases energy when it fuses into an atom with a higher atomic number. (C) can release energy either by decaying into an atom with a lower atomic number or by fusing into an atom with a higher atomic number. (D) does not release energy in any nuclear reaction.
Explanation / Answer
26.A) Pressure is inversely proportional to volume. The relationship between the two is given by the equation P= 1/V. So, an INCREASE in pressure will DECREASE the volume. 26.B) Changing the phase of a substance can depend on a few factors. These are: temperature, pressure, and volume. Temperature can turn any liquid into a gas for example. If you heat liquid water to 100 degrees Celsius, it will boil and release water vapor (water in gaseous form). Pressure alters the interaction between molecules. If molecules are close together (but not tightly packed), they will become a liquid, if the molecules are moving freely, they are a gas. So increasing the pressure can turn a gas into a liquid. The same can be said for the opposite, decreasing pressure can facilitate phase changes, but it will not always change phases (is you have solid aluminum, it will still be solid even if there is no atmospheric pressure) so this rule is not as important in turning something into a gas. Volume is another factor. If you are looking to turn something into a gas, it is best to do it in an open container. The reason is that a closed container can only hold so many atoms that are in motion. Atoms in gaseous phase require a lot more room than atoms in liquid form, so if you want to turn something into a gas, it is best to do it in an open container or have something that will trap only the gas. So it just boils down to temperature mostly. If you want to turn something into a gas (such as hydrogen), it is best to heat it to a high temperature, in an open container, with minimal pressure.
