Question
USE THE FOLLOWING CONSTANTS
(You may not need to use all of them for this questiong)
Unless I mention it, these experiments occur on the surface of the earth
and the atmosphere is ’air’.
Gravity on earth is 10 meters per second squared.
Gravity on the moon is one sixth that of earth’s gravity.
Speed of sound in air is 350 meters per second.
Density of water is 1000 kilograms per cubic meter.
Density of mercury is 15000 kilograms per cubic meter.
Density of ethyl alcohol is 750 kilograms per cubic meter.
All answers must come with explanations. Merely guessing will not give you
full credit.
1 Bernoulli’s Equation
A cylindrical tank 8 feet high and 25 feet in circumference is full of water
and at the top of a hill. A pump pulls water out of this tank at a pressure
of 2 atm and sends it down a circular pipe of radius 4 centimeters. It drains
water at a constant prssure and velocity for 30 seconds and then stops. The
tank is now 20 percent full.
The pipe goes down a hill of height 40 meters and comes out. The pipe at
this point is a square of 20 centimeters to a side.
While the pump is running, what is the pressure and velocity of the water
as it comes out? What is the pressure and velocity of the fluid coming out
if all variables remain the same except that the fluid is now liquid mercury?
The units for your answers must be in atm or meters per second.
