Question
"A billiard ball of mass m = 0.250 kg hits the cushion of a billiard table and rebounds. It's velocity before it hits the cushion is 20.0 m/s at 60.0o with respect to the normal. The glancing blow leaves the ball with a velocity of 12.0 m/s at 71.0o to the other side of the normal. (a) What is the magnitude of the change of momentum of the ball? (b) What is the direction of the change of momentum?"how would i set up the problem in order to find the magnitude of the change in momentum of the ball?
Explanation / Answer
the ball is initially moving towards the wall at angle 60* with the normal of the table
dividing velocity into components Vcos and Vsin
as the momntum is not changing in direction of vsin we leave the component
and ball is moving towards the wall with velcity 20cos60* = 10mts/sec
and rebounces with velocty 12 mts/sec at an angle 71* so component of velocty with which body moving away from wall is 12cos71 = 3.90mts/second
now taking towards the wall as positive change in momentum Pi - Pf = m( 10 - (-3.9)) = 0.25*13.9 mts/sec
= 3.475 Nmts/sec
