Question
Base your answers to questions 44 and 145on the information and diagram below. In the diagram below, circuit A has been constructed by placing two 6-ohm resistors in series with a 12-volt power supply and a 3-aspere fuse. Circuit B has been constructed by placing two 6-ohm resistors in parallel with each other and a 12-volt power supply. A 3-aapere fuse is placed in the pain line. Explain why the series circuit can be successfully operated. Explain why the parallel circuit cannot be successfully operated.Explanation / Answer
You need to find the total load on the power supply, and to do this you need to find the total equivalent resistance of the circuit. For the series circuit, you add the resistor values and get 12. Then, to find the load, use I = V/R: 12V/12 = 1A. Because this value is less than the 3A fuse, the fuse will not blow and the circuit will operate.
For the parallel circuit, the equivalent resistance is 1/(1/6+1/6) = 3. So the current is 12V/3 = 4A. Because this amount is greater than the fuse, the fuse will blow and the circuit will not operate.
