Question

The wheel in Fig. 11-23 (below) has eight equally spaced spokes and a radius of 30 cm. It is mounted on a fixed axle and is spinning at 2.6 rev/s. You want to shoot a 23 cm long arrow parallel to this axle and through the wheel without hitting any of the spokes. Assume that the arrow and the spokes are very thin.

I have come up with 5.52m/s, 6.24m/s, 5.5m/s, and 7.2m/s

I have one more chance on the question and I do not really know how to solve it so an explanation would be great too.

Explanation / Answer

time taken , Rotation speed of wheel and number of spokes 8 equally spaced is
                      t = 1/8 rev / 2.6 rev /s                             = 1/8*2.6                             = 0.048 s a )   minimum speed is                  vmin = 0.23 m/0.048 s                          = 4.784 m/s
