Question

You are actually measuring the magnetic field produced by all four sides of the loop of wire.
(a) How would this affect your data compared to that produced by a single isolated long conductor?
(b) Would the field produced by the upper and lower wires be more or less significant than that produced by the field on the other side of the loop?
(c) Where would the affect of the wire on the other side of the loop be most noticeable--points closer to the front wire, or farther away?
Remember both currents produce a field and the fields are in opposite directions.

Explanation / Answer

a)In case of a single conductor the magnetic field produced will be greater than that of a loop because in case of a loop the magnetic field measured at a point is the sum of fields produced from the opposite faces of a wire, where one face produces positive field while the other produces the opposite field of magnitude less or more of the first. Therefore we get a field less than that produced from a single wire. b) yes the field produced by the upper and lower wires are more significant compared to that produced by other side of the loop as the field lines from the upper and lower wire are stronger compared to that produced from those of the side of the loop which are negligibly small. C) effect of the other side of the wire will be observed at point further away from the front wire since close to the front wire the field from the front wire will be much higher than that of other side of the loop and will be not noticeable.
