Question

(1) A proton moves in the positive x direction through a uniform magnetic field in the positive y direction. What is the direction of the magnetic force on the proton? Explain your answer.

(2) A magnetic field CANNOT:
      A. Exert a force on a charge
      B. accelerate a charge
      C. change the momentum of a charge
      D. change the kinetic energy of a charge
      E. Exist
(Please if you can explain your choice of the answer)

(3) A beam of electrons (with negative charges) moving at 1.3 x 10^6 m/s in a direction perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field travels in a circular arc of radius 0.35 m. What is the strength of the magnetic field?

Explanation / Answer

1) A proton moves in the positive x direction through a uniform magnetic field in the positive y direction. What is the direction of the magnetic force on the proton? Explain your answer.

according to Flemings left gand rule the direction of the magnetic force on the protonwill be out of the plane of the paper.

(2) A magnetic field CANNOT:
      A. Exert a force on a charge
      B. accelerate a charge
      C. change the momentum of a charge
      D. change the kinetic energy of a charge
      E. Exist
(Please if you can explain your choice of the answer)

options C and D   are correct.

because   for options C and D the velocity of the charge should be changed.but when a charge enters the magnetic field it will be bent in the form of circle.but there will be no variation in the velocity.

(3) A beam of electrons (with negative charges) moving at 1.3 x 10^6 m/s in a direction perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field travels in a circular arc of radius 0.35 m. What is the strength of the magnetic field?
if strength=B

Bev=mv*v/r

so B={mv*v/r} /ev=mv/er=9.1*10^-31*[1.3 x 10^6]/0.35*1.6*10^-19*=21.125*10^-6T
