Question
Prove this question and answer why. The Falkirk Wheel is a giant Ferris elevator for boats. You are the conductor of the wheel and you are in charge of being sure that boat traffic flows through the Falkirk channel smoothly. However, you notice that up on the top of the wheel there was a traffic jam and you have let many boats use the wheel to be lifted up to the top channel since then. There are now 5 boats sitting up on the bridge. No one is in danger as far as you can tell, but your boss comes running out screaming "There is too much weight!! All those boats plus the water weight will cause the bridge to collapse!!" What do you tell him to calm him down and prove you deserve a promotion to lead traffic controllerExplanation / Answer
Since boats have lot of air inside them, the weight of the amount of water displaced by them is more than the weight of the boats. So buoyancy force upwards is more than the weight of the boats downwards. Hence boats will not sink and bridge will not collapse.
