Question
Two point charges are placed on the x axis. the Charge +2q is at x=1.5m, and the charge -q is at x=-1.5m. A.) There is a point on the x axis between the two charges where the electrical potential is zero. Where is this point? B) The electrical potential also vanishes at a point in one of the following regions: Option 1 region, x between 1.5m and 5.0m; Option 2 Region x between -1.5m and -3.0m, Option 3 region, x between -3.5m and -5.m . Identify the appropriate region.
Can you please include details about how to solve this problem. I am very confused.
Thanks..
Explanation / Answer
it will before -1.5 means towards negative X axis.
let distance is d from the point -1.5
so Enet =Eby 2q + Eby -q
0 = K*2q/(3+d) + K*(-q)/(d)
so 2/(3+d)= 1/(d)
(3+d) =(2d)
d=3 so it will be at -4.5 cm from origin
