Question
A solid sphere of uniform density has a mass of 8.6 × 104 kg and a radius of 3.7 m. What is the magnitude of the gravitational force due to the sphere on a particle of mass 8.1 kg located at a distance of (a) 14 m and (b) 1.8 m from the center of the sphere? (c) Write a general expression for the magnitude of the gravitational force on the particle at a distancer 3.7 m from the center of the sphere.
I cannot seem to get the answer for B only. I have the answer for A at 2.4*10^-7N and C at 9.1*10^-7N/M. For answer B I come up with 1.6*10^-6N but that is incorrect.
Explanation / Answer
a) F = GMm/r^2 = (6.67*10^-11*8.6*10^4*8.1)/14^2 = 2.37*10^-7 N
b) F = GMm/r^2 = (6.67*10^-11*8.6*10^4*8.1)/8.1^2 = 7.08*10^-7 N
