Question
Mad Max is driving his car at 0.866c. (Take the value of gamma to be 2.) He is approaching a stationary garage. The proper length of Max's car is 18 ft. The proper length of the garage is 14 ft. The garage door is open and an attendant plans to close the door when the car is entirely within the garage. Since the attendant measures the car's length to be 18 ft / 2 = 9 ft, he see's no difficulty performing this task. However, from Max's point of view, the garage is only 14 ft /2 = 7 ft. He claims that the attendant will not be able shut the door while the car is entirely within the garage. Who is correct? Explain you answer.
Explanation / Answer
Here ,
as the garage will be at the proper length when the car is parked
and the car will also be at it's proper length
as the proper length of car = 18 feet
proper length of garage = 14 feet
as the length of car is larger than the length of garage
hence , the attendant is right that he will not be able to shut the door
