Question
A balloon rubbed against denim gains a charge of -8.0 mu C. What is the electric force between the balloon and the denim when the two are separated by a distance of 5.0 cm? (Assume that the charges are located at a point.) Two identical conducting spheres are placed with their centers 0.30 m apart. One is given a charge of +12 times 10^-9 C and the other is given a charge of -18 times 10^-9 C. a. Find the electric force exerted on one sphere by the other. b. The spheres are connected by a conducting wire. After equilibrium has occurred, find the electric force between the two spheres. Two electrostatic point charges of +60.0 mu C and +50.0 mu C exert a repulsive force on each other of 175 N. What is the distance between the two charges?Explanation / Answer
1) Both will have same charge
Q = kq^2 / r^2
= 9*10^9*(8*10^-6)^2 / 0.05^2
= 230.4 N (repulsive)
2) a) F = kq1q2 / r^2
=9*10^9 * 12*10^-9*18*10^-9 / 0.3^2
= 2.16*10^-5 N (attractive)
b) when they are rubbed , the charges will be same
Q = 12-18 / 2 = -3 *10^-9 C
F = 9*10^9*(3*10^-9)^2 / 0.3^2
= 9*10^-7 N
3) F = kq1q2/r^2
175 = 9*10^9 * 60*10^-6*50*10^-6 / r^2
r = 0.3927 m
