2. On the Drosophila X allele y producechromosome, the dominant allele y' produces gray body color and the recessive 2+ and lozenge eye shape with a recessive allele Iz. These genes approximately 28%. Heterozygous females for these genes were dominant a yelow body. This gene is linked to one controlling full eye shape by a dominant allele lai eye shape. Out of 4000 individuals, 540 had yellow bodies and full eyes and 580 had gray lozenge eyes. The other two phenotypes showed up in equal numbers recombine with a frequency of mated to males with yellow bodies and a) What is the distance between genes y and lz? b) What was the arrangement of the genes on the chromosomes on the heterozygous females of the cross?

Explanation / Answer

a) Distance between genes :

Female Parent = Grey body and full eye shape = y+ y ; lz+ lz

Male Parent = Yellow bodies and full eye shape = yy ; lz+ lz+

Recombinant genes = yellow & full ; grey & lozenge

Parental genes = grey & full ; yellow & lozenge

Distance between genes y and lz = (number of recombinant individuals/ Total number of individuals) *100 = (540+580)/4000 * 100 = 28 cM

b) Arrangement

Parental genes are not crossed , so they will be in the ends.

Recombinant genes are crossed , so they will be in the centre.

Therefore , the arrangement was any of the following combinations,

1) Grey & Full ; yellow & full ; grey & lozenge ; yellow & lozenge

2) Grey & full ; grey & lozenge ; yellow & full ; yellow & lozenge
