Question
In the film Jurassic Park, Richard Attenborough's character, John Hammond examines a prehistoric mosquito, "TOXORHYNCHITES RUTILUS" encased in a preserved piece of amber. The index of refraction of amber is 1.6 and one surface of the amber can be assumed to be spherically convex with a radius of curvature = 2.5 mm. The mosquito's head happens to be on the central axis of that surface and, when viewed along the axis, "appears" to be buried 5 mm into the amber. Determine how deep is the mosquito actually buried? None of the listed options 28.2 cm 0.8 cm 1.6 mm 1.6 cmExplanation / Answer
We know that refraction through curved surface,
n1/s + n2/i = (n2-n1)/R
-1.6/s + 1/i = (-0.6)/2.5
s = 1.6/ [1/i+0.6/2.5]
now for second refraction -1/i + 1.6/v = (0.6)/2.5
-1/i + 1.6/5 = 0.6/2.5
i = 1/[1.6/5 - 0.6/2.5] = 12.5
for first refraction,
s = 1.6/ [1/-12.5+0.6/2.5]
= 10 mm = 1 cm
none of these
