Question

Question: A person exerts a force of 64.0 N at an angle of 49.0 degrees to the face of the door on a door that is 83.0 cm wide. Calculate the magnitude of the torque acting on the door.

My approach:
The door swings on a hinge, so we'll make the hinge the center of our circle. Therefore, the radius of the circle is .83m.

Now I personally don't know how to visualize someone pushing on a door at an angle. I'm assuming its needed for the equation:
Torque = Force x distance x sin(theta)

So I figured this was just a plug and chug type problem where we can use the equation above.

Torque = (64N) x (.83m) x sin(49) = -50.66N m

This is incorrect. I tried positive 50.66N m as well.

Where is my mistake? I assume its the way I'm visualizing this problem.

Explanation / Answer

torque = 64*sin49*.83 = 40.1 N.m
