Question
A racing dog breeder would like to breed greyhounds that run faster, but she does not know the heritability of running speed. She measures the running speed of 100 greyhounds, and mean running speed is 14.2 m/s. You pick 20 champion greyhounds with the fastest running speed to breed. Their mean running speed is 16.6 m/s. The offspring of these greyhounds have average running speed of 15.3 m/s. What is heritability of running speed in the breeder’s dog population? Show all your work. Answer: 0.45
Narrow Sense Heritability –
h2 = M2 - M / M1 - M
M= 14.2 m/s
M1= 16.6 m/s
M2= 15.3 m/s
Now-
h2 = 15.3-14.2 / 16.6-14.2
= 1.1/2.4 = 0.45
So, answer is h2=0.45
