Question

A venturi tube is a tube with a constriction in it. Pressure in a venturi tube can be measured by attaching a U-shaped fluid-filled device to the venturi tube as shown in the figure above. The density of air is 1.20 kg/m3 and the density of water is 1000 kg/m3. Use g = 10 m/s2.

(a) If the fluid in the U is water, and there is a 10.0 cm difference between the water levels on the two sides, what is the magnitude of the pressure difference between points 1 and 2 in the venturi tube? (Pa)

(b) The venturi tube has air flowing through it. If the cross-sectional area of the venturi tube is 2 times larger at point 1 than it is at point 2, what is the air speed at point 2? (m/s)

Explanation / Answer

P1- P2= Dw* h* g = 1000 * (.1m )* 10 = 1000 pa= 1 kpa same mass flow rate A1V1= A2V2 A1/A2= 2 v1= V2/2 from bernouli eqaution P1+ 1/2 D(air)* V1^2 = P2+ 1/2 D(air)* V2^2 p1- p2 = 1000 = 1/2* 1.2 * ( V2^2- (v2/2)^2) 5000/3 = 3/4 v2^2 gives v2= 47.14 m/s
